Public Relations: A Career That No-one Really Knows About

As a graduate in Public Relations, I’ve experienced numerous times where, after telling some one what I’m studying, they’ve asked “What is that?”

The textbook definition is “Public relations is the management, through communication, of perceptions and strategic relationships between an organisation and its internal and external stakeholders” (PRISA, 1998)

However, Public Relations is more than what meets the eye. We can work in almost every field and branch out into many majors. The opportunities are endless. We can major in crisis management, event planning, career management, copywriting, social media managing, marketing coordinating, etc.

The bottom line of our qualification is to enhance the image of a business. Now, many may ask “Does that not mean you have to lie and hide the truth to make a company look good?” That’s where one has to question their values.

Does your values align with the company? Do you mind lying to protect a company? These are questions you might ask yourself in this situation. But then again, no one can force you to do anything you don’t want to.

Here are some tips I’ve learnt along the way:

  1. Always put yourself and your values first

There’s no one that knows you better than you. You’re unique, own it.

  1. Make sure you’re doing something you love and enjoy

I mean, you don’t want to wake up every single day for the rest of your life and dread your day ahead, do you?

  1. Keep active to avoid growing old fast

I’m not speaking about going to the gym only but keep your brain active too. Challenge yourself and always keep learning because no one can say they’ve learnt everything there is to know.

  1. Trust your instinct

Your gut is always right. How many times have you thought “I should’ve gone with my gut”? What you feel is right, most probably is right. Don’t ignore your instinct.

  1. Show up fully

Don’t dwell on the past and the future. Focus on the now and do it well. Prove your worth and be the best at what you do.
